Over the last several weeks, I have seen an uptick in the calls for rules to be suspended or overlooked in high profile matches.
Over Christmas it was the Buena kid's coaches cutting his hair and the call from some very high level people (including Jordan Burroughs) that the call on his hair should not have been made in the first place.
This weekend, it was Suriano v Fix. The flo announcers were saying that a match of that level should never be settled on a penalty call. I have seen arguments for waving off Suriano's locking hands (the best of which was that it was within reaction time; the worst of which is that there were only two supporting points of Fix's on the mat - rule clearly states that all the weight must be supported but the wrestlers feet). But, many people are arguing that the hands to the face call should have been waived. That perhaps the ref did not realize, being in Sudden Victory, the call would end the match, and that had he been aware, he never would have made the call.
Hands to the face has been a point of emphasis all season. The rules committee wants it called every single time, that is clear.
A lot of people have stated that the ref's inserted themselves into the match. One of my son's said the wrestlers were as much to blame because they were not trying to put points on the board, I tend to agree.
What are your thoughts? Should refs avoid making calls in close matches or are rules to be enforced regardless of the context.
