Arab comes out strong in the first round with 13 out of 14 wrestlers winning. 13 Pins, 1 major, and a surprise sudden victory. Establishing a strong lead over second place Oxford. The Knights only real surprise was when Homewood's 8th place south section finisher Jeremiah Dunham took Arab's north section champion Conner Griffin into overtime. Griffin scoring a takedown in the first 15 seconds of OT to keep Arab out of the loss column in the opening round.
Oxford couldn't stay with Arab going 9-2 this round. With only 11 wrestlers to Arab's 14, the Yellow Jackets will have to score more bonus points than the 7 falls recorded in this preliminary round if they hope to catch Arab.
Third place Homewood went 9-3 in the opener. 2 of those losses were to the leaders, Arab. Kris Wilkins gave up a pin to Arab's Nick Cater and the already mentioned OT loss at 285. After dropping two matches at 138 and 145, the Patriots got hot with their upper weights, posting 4 consecutive pins. That momentum almost carried through to heavyweight to earn them what might have been the biggest upset of the day.
Top 5 after the first round:
1. Arab 49.0
2. Oxford 34.0
3. Homewood 32.0
4. Southside-Gadsden 26.0
5. Hartselle 24.0
The 1A-5A race is very tight. The first round saw at least 4 different teams on top of the leader-board throughout the round.
South section winner Leeds finished the round one point ahead of north section winner Madison County. Leeds started the round slow, dropping their first two matches before winning four straight matches by pin. They would drop two more before recovering and winning their last three for the day. That put them at 7-4 for the round, but all seven wins were by pins, earning them enough bonus point to take the lead.
Madison County went 8-2 but with 4 falls, and 3 majors the bonus points were not enough to edge Leeds. McHugh started the tigers off right with a first period pin at 106, but it was pins and majors from 170 to 220 that kept them in the hunt.
With 6.5 points separating 1st through 5th, this will be a fun team race to watch.
1. Leeds 28.0
2. Madison County 27.0
3. Cleburne County 24.0
4. Ohatchee 23.0
5. Saint James 21.5
